Between kisses and sips of champagne this past New Year’s, we bid farewell to several beauty trends that were everywhere in 2105 and opened the door to a bunch of new makeup, hair, nail and skin care developments that will shape our faces, hair, hands, bodies and social media feeds over the next year. I have a ideas for trends that should get the heave-ho (see: the Kylie lip challenge and rampant ageism) and ones we’d be better for if they were big in 2016 (body positivity and the brown lip shades that bring back junior high memories of dancing to Debbie Gibson and Tiffany). To add expertise to BBTA’s beauty prognostication, I asked a few of our favorite beauty authorities to share their thoughts on the beauty crazes that should have expired on Dec. 31 and those that began their ascent on Jan. 1. If their predictions are correct, be prepared for a fascinating year ahead on the beauty front.
When nail art finally went to the wayside last year, fashion and beauty gurus everywhere rejoiced. It turns out nail art wasn’t quite ready to take a back seat though. Fast forward to Fashion Week 2015 and nail art was everywhere – thankfully with a much chicer and sophisticated look that even the hard core anti-nail art gal could appreciate. The runways fully embraced the comeback, with linear designs and geometric patterns gracing the nails of models. Like all the other minimalist fans out there, this is the kind of nail art I can get behind. There are tons of DIY looks that are actually achievable. Try some of these Pinterest worthy negative space manicures Total Beauty suggests. If you’re really having a lazy girl moment, simply add a thin gold line to your nails and you’re right on trend!
In the fickle world of nail trends, nothing lasts forever. (Not even a universal disdain for French tips.) With that in mind, I can’t say I didn’t see this one coming: E! News’ Mani Cam is done. You know what this means, right? The era of nail art is officially over! Considering that multicolored 3-D designs sprouting out of a grown woman’s fingertips are—let’s be honest with ourselves—garish, I’m thrilled that what fashion deems chic right now are pared-down nudes. If beige is just too boring for you, maybe you’ll prefer the season’s fresh crop of pinks.
