20's, Skin

As a beauty editor, I’m in a constant state of lipstick-testing and concealer-matching. For any makeup lover, my job has perks. But my desk is not just a makeup counter with a laptop; It’s also a lab. A huge part of my job involves knowing the basic chemistry behind skincare products.

While scientific knowledge is key in understanding how all the wonderful products in the world work, it doesn’t take a scholar to know that there are plenty of acne products that don’t work effectively. Even some of the richest, most famous people can’t get rid of their acne!  You might not always see it under all that caked-on makeup, but in the age of HD everything, it doesn’t get past this beauty buff.

Given the lack of amazing acne products out there, I was not enthused by my latest assignment: reading through the details of a user-perception study conducted on Proactiv+ shortly before its launch.

But as soon as I started reading, I actually became excited. Allow me to explain.

After 13 weeks of use, everyone in the study said they’d keep using this “unknown” system (its brand name was a mystery to them). 100%. And 98% reported fewer blemishes, better clarity and improved overall skin texture.

But there was one more huge number I could hardly wrap my brain around. Over 85% of study participants said that, compared to prescription acne treatments, they noticed better results with Proactiv+. How could that be? Since I had a hard time believing it, I dug further.

That’s when I discovered Proactiv+ had clinical studies that showed that, compared to the leading topical prescription, Proactiv+ actually cleared acne four times faster†! This finding totally blew my mind!

Proactiv+ is different because it’s the only acne treatment you can buy that has skin-friendly Smart Target® technology. This exclusive, advanced technology concentrates the benzoyl peroxide (BPO) medicine and steers it directly into pores where it can do its thing—kill acne-causing bacteria. If too much BPO remains on the upper layer of skin (or dermis), it can cause more irritation. That’s why Smart Target® is the Proactiv+ secret to being both gentle on the skin and exceptional at clearing acne blemishes compared to the leading topical prescription.

I certainly didn’t think I’d be writing a story about acne products this week. I also never thought I’d be writing about something so seemingly obvious. Who in the world hasn’t seen a Proactiv® commercial? Now, it seems that the newer Proactiv+ is making all the difference in the world of skincare. I’m just happy to report there’s something out there that really works.

The folks at Proactiv are offering a free online quiz to help set you up with the skincare solution that is best for you.  Bonus? You’ll get a FREE gift and FREE shipping with your introductory order!  There is no worry if you just want to try it- they offer a 60-day money-back guarantee.  If you aren’t happy, you can send the empty bottles back and they’ll refund the purchase price.

Study participants suffering from mild to moderate acne using the most commonly prescribed generic acne treatment gel (as of April, 2014) took  4 weeks to achieve approximately the same reduction in total lesion count as achieved by study participants after just 1 week’s use of PA+.  After 12 weeks use, total lesion count reduction data between the same 2 groups showed that PA+ was still twice as fast.

Hi Heather, i used to get the odd one or two-but then i started to get major bteokaurs! The best tips i have discovered are these: Sudocrem-Celebrities like cheryl Cole, Katie Price and Lauren Goodger Use it. But it takes time! Toothpaste-Haha again it sounds odd, but it is also a celebrity tip. It works really well i find, dries the spot out. Salt and oil. This works really well, gives your skin a healthy glow and the salt works as a facial scrub.Remember not to be to harsh with what you use on your skin-it eventualy ends up in your bloodstream! Hope i helped x

Proactiv + does not work on cystic and nodular hormonal types of acne though. It was a daily ritual of mine for a while and I was waiting for it to work until I finally saw the fine print on their website. :(

That is true- but there actually aren’t ANY topical acne treatments that will help with cystic acne. Cystic acne needs to be treated from the inside with antibiotics. Taking antibiotics is actually the most effective acne treatment, but you end up putting yourself at risk to get sick very easily which is why dermatologists don’t keep people on regular antibiotic treatment.

Hi Irie, I know how you feel about cystic acne because have them also. But I have found something that really worked for me. I started using essential oils specifically organic tea tree oil with almond oil. My skin has really gotten better. You should do some research on them. If you want to know more you can also email me at

Raw unfiltered honey, i suggest honey made from lavender flowers not the infused works the best. But most important honey should come locally as it will treat your seasonal allergies. Yes this draws out cystic acne. Place on face wear as long as you feel and wash off with warm water it works

NowI just wish they make an Acne treatment that you don’t have to botheerusing everyday. Life gets in the way or sometimes you are just to lazy to put on all that product. Sometimes your jsut late for work or have a full schedule ahead of you. Life happens and things are forgotten or put aside. I wish they had acne shots like they do for birth control. You only have to get it once every 3 months or so. Cx

The birth control shot is the cause for tons of womans breakouts, tbe hormonal kind that cannot be treated topically. Unfortunatley!

You’re skin is an investment. Like anything….if you really want it you have to make and take time for it. There is not a just one step solution if you truely have acne. I’m a licensed esthetician and I used to have cystic acne that I have completely gotten rid of through treatments and making a great at home regimen for myself…… And dedicating time to it. Life can get crazy but if you want better skin you make time for it.

I have been blessed to have never had problem skin, but I had a nephew who suffered severely with acne. He tried it and said it was a wonderful product — and he is the biggest skeptic, naysayer, non-believing person in the universe … for him to endorse it, the product must be working miracles! LOL!

Does proactive work on blackheads? I used accutane years ago so I don’t have bad acne… Just a few blackheads.

I have dark black spots and blackhead and bumps what a good treatment

  • Reply Kayla March 14, 2016 at 9:39 pm

I don’t have acne I just get bumps sometimes but I want something that will make that stop. Also if any of you are using really expensive stuff to help with acne scarsI, and don’t wanna spend a lot of money look for vitamin e cream. I use it every day and I put it on the spots and you will see results within 2 weeks or 4. Sometimes if the spots are worse than others it will take longer. Also a thing about the vitamin e cream I wouldn’t use it all over your face it makes your skin very oily so let it soak in then wipe your face off. I hope someone tries this Bc it has worked very well for me.

I used this for a week and it dried out my skin so badly I had dry patches all over my face and got an allergic reaction and it didn’t even help my acne it made it worse. My skin is still suffering the consequences from using this product years later…don’t buy this crap it’s a waste of money.
