MICRODERMABRASION – AN AT HOME TREATMENT OR IN OFFICE PROCEDURE?

Microdermabrasion has come a long way since its debut in dermatologists’ offices. What was once regarded as a high end treatment for celebrities and the wealthy is now extremely accessible – you can stop by your doctor’s office on your lunch break or do an at home treatment after work. Microdermabrasion continues to gain popularity as a non-invasive, quick way to improve the appearance of your skin. So how does such a simple procedure work so well? In layman’s terms, it sands away the dead skin cells that have accumulated and cause a dull complexion. When microdermabrasion is done at a professional’s office, a hand-held device streams tiny crystals across your skin. An attached vacuum simultaneously suctions those exfoliating crystals back into the machine, along with the dead or loosened skin. Continue Reading

COACHELLA CLICHES – THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

A little musical festival called Coachella kicked off last weekend, as anyone with a social media account knows. The desert town of Indio, CA quickly turned home to the largest population of girls donning crop tops and ankle boots at any given point in time. There were plenty of new takes on festival style this year and of course the perennial looks staking their claim as wardrobe staples (cut off jean shorts and floppy hats aren’t going anywhere it looks like). While some of these looks still reign supreme, it’s time for others to take a back seat and gracefully make way for the next wave of trends. With the help of social media it’s pretty apparent what was trending this year, so let’s break a few of them down:

EYEBROW EXTENSIONS MAY BE THE BEAUTY TREATMENT YOU DIDN’T KNOW YOU WANTED

When your friend says she’s going to the salon to get hair extensions or eyelash extensions, you probably don’t think much of it except for maybe a quick bout of jealousy that you’re not the one treating yourself. When she says she’s getting eyebrow extensions you might question her judgement a bit more. With the ongoing quest for eyebrows to be on ‘fleek’ (whatever that means) salons have started to up their brow capabilities. Tinting, threading, waxing, and tweezing are taking a backseat to eyebrow extensions – the latest craze in the beauty biz that’s on its way to mainstream America. Continue Reading

KYLIE JENNER’S BEAUTY SECRETS (LIP LINING INCLUDED) ARE ABOUT TO GET A LOT MORE ACCESSIBLE

Say what you want about the Kardashian/Jenner girls but there’s no denying they know how to create a media presence. They’re not bad at making money either; the family’s net worth is estimated at $101 million and as the reigning queens of reality TV and social media it’s safe to say they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. Kylie is the latest family member to add to their rapidly expanding empire. Following in the entrepreneurial steps of her sisters, the youngest star of the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” clan announced on her Instagram (to a cool 30 million followers) that she’s launching her own beauty website, aptly named KylieJenner.com. The 17-year old may not necessarily be qualified to dish out beauty advice considering her lack of professional training, but the girl has grown up surrounded by her “glam squad” – a crew of makeup and beauty experts that seem to know a thing or two about what they’re doing. BEACH BAG APPROVED

Now that we’ve kicked off June, it’s all sun and sand from here. It may not technically be summer for another 17 days but as far as I’m concerned it’s already here. Regardless of where you’re headed to soak up the sun, you can’t show up empty handed. Finding the perfect suit is always important, but a properly packed beach bag is key to making the most of your well-deserved time in the sun. Here are some of my personal necessities: Continue Reading

‘CALL ME CAITLYN’ – THE COVER STORY BREAKING THE INTERNET

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, has finally introduced herself to the world. The first images of Jenner were taken by famed photographer Annie Leibowitz in Jenner’s Malibu home for the cover of Vanity Fair, and they’re nothing short of amazing. Social media has rallied behind Jenner’s brave actions, with the hashtag #CallMeCaitlyn gaining popularity within minutes of her debut. The Jenner and Kardashian families weighed in immediately, as expected. Dozens of other celebrities have greeted Jenner with praise, many taking to their Twitter accounts with words of support. Jenner herself joined in on the media frenzy with her new Twitter account – and to no one’s surprise she broke a Guinness World Record by reaching 1 million followers in 4 hours and 3 minutes. If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one was worth a million. Continue Reading

HOW TO MAKE YOUR FOUNDATION WORK WITH A TAN – DON’T WORRY, IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK

Now that you’re able to enjoy the sunlight of spring after sitting fireside all winter while the polar vortex made its grand appearance, you’ve probably noticed your foundation isn’t such a great match anymore. With summer and even more time frolicking in the sun right around the corner, it’s officially time for a foundation update. The budget conscious will be happy to hear that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go out and buy a new bottle of foundation to match your sun kissed glow. Makeup pro Bobbi Brown shares how to make your current routine work with your tan by adding some simple tweaks. Her advice is especially helpful to those of us that love a good self-tan, as we’re all too familiar with how quickly it can fade. Buying a new foundation every time that coat of St. Tropez (my personal favorite) starts to leave you just isn’t realistic. Byride has their own suggestion on how to avoid purchasing a stockpile of foundations: gel bronzer. So take some of these simple tips and keep soaking up the sunshine and self-tanners.

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO FOR BEAUTY? WE’RE TALKING BLOOD, FISH, SNAILS, AND ALCOHOL

Forget microdermabrasion and laser facials. Across the globe, unusual beauty treatments are giving “normal” ones a run for their money. With promises of glowing skin, reduced wrinkles, and an overall more youthful look, women continue to prove they’ll do some pretty gruesome stuff in the name of beauty. From fish soaking off your dead skin to bath tubs filled with red wine, here’s a skeptical look at four of the most bizarre treatments: Continue Reading

THE SPRING CLEANING YOU SHOULDN’T SKIP – YOUR MAKEUP DRAWER

For most of us beauty hoarders out there, our makeup drawer could easily be compared to a black hole – many items will enter but few will make it out. In our defense, it’s hard to let go of that beloved bronzer or perfect pink lip shade. But like they say, all good things must come to an end. Since companies aren’t required to put an expiration date on cosmetic products, it can be a challenge to know when it is time to let go. You’ve probably noticed some products will have a jar symbol with a number next to it that tells you how many months you have until it should no longer be used. The problem there is you have to know when you actually purchased the item, which is an issue if you have that black hole style makeup drawer I mentioned. Continue Reading

THE BEST MAKEUP BRUSHES TO GET THE JOB DONE

I like to think I’m pretty up to date on the latest and greatest beauty products out there, but when it comes to makeup brushes I’m admittedly a few steps behind. I’m all about the instant gratification you get from finding a new foundation or lip color that suits you perfectly, which is certainly not something to take for granted. Makeup brushes just don’t do it for me though. I’m working to change my lack of brush enthusiasm after continually hearing how crucial they are to your makeup routine. It seems like beauty websites have been inundated with articles questioning makeup artists on the importance of a good brush and when to use which kind lately. So I figured it’s finally time to ditch my careless brush ways and revamp my collection. Not only is there a type of brush  (flat, round, fan, etc) for whatever product you’re applying,  there’s a million versions of each type. ELLE helps declutter the saturated market with their list of the 12 best makeup brushes for tackling every beauty need. Byrdie does some further investigating and finds the best brushes for your budget, and their inside expert knowledge is pretty crazy – who knew there was so much behind a makeup brush?
